Sighting in Plobsheim, July 5, 2009

Bas-Rhin, Grand Est, France

Sighting on July 5, 2009 in Plobsheim (Bas-Rhin, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a sky lantern (class A).

What happened

During the night of 4 to 5 July 2009, several people standing in a garden noticed lights in the sky. The lights moved slowly and made no noise, arranged in a V formation. They then vanished suddenly.

The gendarmerie investigation established that the lights were Chinese lanterns, about fifty of them, released during a wedding from a neighbouring golf course. GEIPAN therefore concluded that the witnesses had seen flying lanterns passing by, and the case is classified A (identified).
