Sighting in Plobsheim, June 14, 2014

Bas-Rhin, Grand Est, France

Sighting on June 14, 2014 in Plobsheim (Bas-Rhin, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

A witness saw 21 yellow-orange balls cross the night sky over a weekend. The sighting lasted a few minutes, long enough for the witness to take photos and videos. The witness said there was no wind. The balls moved from the northeast to the southwest. No other testimony was collected.

The investigation found that the balls strongly resembled Thai lanterns, most likely released nearby at the end of a private party. Their direction of travel matches the northeast wind recorded at Strasbourg, which was fairly strong, between 20 and 30 km/h. The witness was probably sheltered by the houses, which would explain why they did not feel the wind. GEIPAN classified the case as B: probable observation of Thai lanterns.
