Sighting in Plouhinec, March 7, 2015

Finistère, Bretagne, France

Sighting on March 7, 2015 in Plouhinec (Finistère, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

On a Saturday evening at 21:33, a witness briefly saw four pale white lights in the sky. They moved slowly and silently in a straight line, then vanished into a cloud. The motion went from west to north. No other witness came forward.

GEIPAN considered that luminous balls crossing the sky over a few minutes on a weekend night strongly suggested Thai lanterns, most likely released nearby at the end of a private party. The direction of travel fits the south wind recorded at Quimper. The sighting was very short and the information imprecise, so the case carries little weight. GEIPAN classified it B: probable observation of Thai lanterns.
