Sighting in Pont-Saint-Pierre, January 11, 2014

Eure, Normandie, France

Sighting on January 11, 2014 in Pont-Saint-Pierre (Eure, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably an animal or natural object (bird, insect, pollen…) (class B).

What happened

At about 4:25 pm, a witness was looking at the moon in a cloudy sky when they noticed as many as eight bright white lights. They appeared one after another, swirling silently, and then left the witness's view along a straight path. The sighting lasted only fifteen seconds. No other testimony was collected.

The investigation noted a clear, bright sky, good visibility, a low sun near the horizon and a contrast effect. The phenomena were in a favourable position to be seen by the witness, with strong reflection of sunlight, and their visible shape was also taken into account. GEIPAN concluded that all the conditions were met for the witness to have seen ordinary white birds flying at high altitude and reflecting sunlight strongly toward them. The case was classified B: probable sighting of birds in high-altitude flight.
