Sighting in Poussan, March 14, 2014

Hérault, Occitanie, France

Sighting on March 14, 2014 in Poussan (Hérault, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a meteor or fireball (class A).

What happened

At around 7:30 pm, a driver and their daughter were looking through the windshield of their car when they saw a luminous phenomenon cross the sky at very high speed. The sky was cloudy. It appeared as a large, very bright point followed by a short trail, and it covered part of the sky in about one second before disappearing below the horizon.

Many other witnesses also described the event on online forums, and a video was recorded in Catalonia, Spain. According to GEIPAN, the brief passage, the look of the bright point and its trail match a bolide, meaning a meteoroid, a small rocky body, entering the atmosphere at very high speed. The case was classified A: identified as a bolide.
