Sighting in Pré-en-Pail, June 1986

Mayenne, Pays de la Loire, France

Sighting in June 1986 in Pré-en-Pail (Mayenne, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

A witness came forward to report a circle of hardened brown earth in a chicken coop. It measured 1.10 m across and had appeared at some point in June. Within a ring 0.40 m wide, the soil did not absorb water and there was little or no vegetation. The witness also said they felt a tingling sensation when stepping into the circle.

Two other witnesses, who had seen an intense white column of light in June, were also interviewed as part of the investigation.

The phenomenon resembles what are known as fairy rings, most likely caused by mycelium preventing any plant growth. This explanation does not account for the tingling sensations described, and nothing else made it possible to confirm them. The case was classified C, meaning there was insufficient data.
