Sighting in Rahon, November 23, 2004

Jura, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France

Sighting on November 23, 2004 in Rahon (Jura, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty (class A).

What happened

A witness driving a car noticed a triangular object, which they estimated to be about ten metres across. It hung motionless above the trees and carried three steady lights: one white, one red and one blue. The witness heard no sound. When the object began to move, the witness fled.

The investigation established that the phenomenon was an airliner flying at low altitude on its approach to land. It had been required to fly a loop before touching down. The triangle the witness described was most likely a Boeing 738 seen from the rear three-quarter angle. GEIPAN therefore classed the case as A, meaning identified.
