Sighting in Reichstett, January 16, 2010

Bas-Rhin, Grand Est, France

Sighting on January 16, 2010 in Reichstett (Bas-Rhin, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class B).

What happened

A witness was driving along the A4 motorway toward Strasbourg when they noticed a light resembling the planet Venus. It seemed to follow the vehicle and stayed in view for a few minutes. Between Vendenheim and Strasbourg, its altitude and apparent speed did not change. On reaching Strasbourg, buildings hid it and the witness lost sight of it.

The GEIPAN considered the observation only slightly strange. It concluded that the witness most likely mistook the approach lights of an airliner, seen head-on, for something unusual. The case was classified B: probable sighting of an aircraft.
