Sighting in Reims, April 14, 2011

Marne, Grand Est, France

Sighting on April 14, 2011 in Reims (Marne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a light from the ground (searchlight, laser, vehicle…) (class B).

What happened

At around 9:45 p.m., a witness watched a light move quickly across the sky for a few minutes. It traced figure-eight patterns against a cloudy sky.

The investigation found that the witness's description closely matched the look of laser projectors used for festive light shows in nightclubs, at fairs or at special events. Low cloud made the effect very visible. A funfair was being held in Reims that day, and it was probably the source of what the witness saw. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as B: a probable sighting of light animations produced by a laser projector.
