Sighting in Remoulins, September 19, 2021
Gard, Occitanie, France
Sighting on September 19, 2021 in Remoulins (Gard, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was the Moon (class A).
What happened
At around midnight, a driver on the way home saw a patch of light ahead that seemed to come from behind the clouds. Throughout the journey it swayed from one side of the road to the other, always in front of the vehicle, a few metres away and at treetop height according to the driver's estimate. At the roundabout, the driver took the third exit, heading north; the light then ended up behind the car and moved away. On reaching the car park, the driver found it ahead again, to the south. The observation lasted about 30 minutes, and the witness took a photograph of the phenomenon at the very end.
According to GEIPAN, the account was precise and consistent, particularly thanks to the photograph, and the witness answered the investigator's requests promptly. Study of the file and of the picture led to the conclusion that the witness had mistaken the Moon for something else. It lay in the witness's line of sight at every stage of the drive, yet the witness never mentioned it. The light seen was the Moon's glow reflected on clouds, and the slow change in the clouds could have produced the movements perceived. The impression of a phenomenon leading the car and swaying is explained by the respective positions of the Moon and the witness as they travelled, the state of the road, and the concentration that driving demands. GEIPAN classified the case as A.
