Sighting in Rodez, February 20, 2009

Aveyron, Occitanie, France

Sighting on February 20, 2009 in Rodez (Aveyron, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a meteor or fireball (class B).

What happened

At around 7 a.m., a motorist saw a blue-green luminous phenomenon cross the sky, moving from northwest to southeast. The file gives no further details, such as the duration, the apparent size or the weather.

GEIPAN was unable to match this account against the database of amateur meteor observers or against that of the French meteor observation network. Even so, the characteristics the witness reported fit the atmospheric entry of a meteoroid in every respect. The case was therefore classified B: it was probably the sighting of a bolide, that is, a meteoroid falling through the atmosphere.
