Sighting in Rouen, July 21, 2015

Seine-Maritime, Normandie, France

Sighting on July 21, 2015 in Rouen (Seine-Maritime, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At around 11 p.m., a witness noticed a fire-colored flying object in the night sky. It moved quickly in a straight line and made no noise at all. The sighting lasted between 10 and 15 seconds. No other witness account was collected.

GEIPAN found that several details fit a Thai lantern: the orange color, identical to that of a lantern, and the rounded shape, which is how a lantern looks from a distance. The object traveled in the direction of the prevailing wind, it was silent, and the short duration of the observation matches the lifespan of these lanterns. The case was therefore classified B: probable sighting of a Thai lantern.
