Sighting in Rouen, May 24, 2023

Seine-Maritime, Normandie, France

Sighting on May 24, 2023 in Rouen (Seine-Maritime, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was the International Space Station (ISS) (class A).

What happened

The witness was alone in their garden when they noticed a large white point of light in the sky. For about three minutes it moved silently, at a steady pace and in a straight line, from the northwest toward the southeast. The witness filmed it.

Only one account was collected, but the GEIPAN rates the case's consistency as good because the video backs up the information the witness gave. The investigation tested the hypothesis that this was a pass of the International Space Station (ISS). The point-like shape, the colour and the brightness, comparable to a star, along with the straight path and constant speed, all fit this explanation. The CNES Space Surveillance Service checked the azimuths where the object appeared and disappeared, its maximum elevation, the start time and how long it was visible, and all of them matched the ISS orbit as seen from Rouen. The video also confirms the appearance and straight-line motion expected of the ISS. The GEIPAN classified the case as A: sighting of the ISS.
