Sighting in Rouhe, April 1, 2009

Doubs, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France

Sighting on April 1, 2009 in Rouhe (Doubs, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

In October 2010, a witness reported an observation made on 1 April 2009 at 6:45 a.m. From an open window, they were looking at a gap in a dark, cloudy sky when three white, circular, very bright phenomena crossed it from west to east, about three seconds apart. They looked identical in size, speed and trajectory. A dark red shape then appeared, and the witness felt they were looking at fire. The sky then cleared very quickly. The observation was continuous and lasted about twenty seconds, with no particular noise.

The witness was alone, and no other account was collected. GEIPAN considered the strangeness of the case hard to assess given the unusual description of the phenomenon, and its consistency low, since there was no cross-checking or independent testimony. The area lies within a heavily used military air corridor, which makes military aircraft a likely explanation. However, some details remain hard to explain, such as the complete absence of noise and the thin red line trailing behind the phenomenon. After three years, too little data on any military activity was available to confirm this lead. The case was classified C, for lack of independent testimony and cross-checking.
