Sighting in Saint-Benoît, January 24, 1977

La Réunion, France

Sighting on January 24, 1977 in Saint-Benoît (La Réunion, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At 6:17 a.m., three people saw a column of vapour or smoke coming down from the sky. A patch of foam was visible on the surface of the ocean, showing that an object had fallen into the water. It lay about 4 km from the shore and roughly 8 to 10 km from where the witnesses were.

No other witness account of this phenomenon was collected. Because the point of impact was hard to pin down, no search was carried out. The GEIPAN concluded that the witnesses had seen an object falling into the ocean, but classed the case as C, since the available data were insufficient.
