Sighting in Saint-Brice-Courcelles, September 10, 2011

Marne, Grand Est, France

Sighting on September 10, 2011 in Saint-Brice-Courcelles (Marne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

On a Saturday evening, at around 11:45 pm, several witnesses noticed glows crossing the sky, which puzzled them. The objects were yellow-orange and drifted in the direction of the wind, with a brighter centre.

GEIPAN found that the witnesses' description fitted Thai lanterns very well. The time, close to midnight, and the day, a Saturday night, are also typical for this kind of release. Identifying whoever launched the lanterns would have allowed the case to be rated A, but that information was not available. GEIPAN therefore rated it B: probable sighting of Thai lanterns.
