Sighting in Saint-Corneille, June 6, 2016

Sarthe, Pays de la Loire, France

Sighting on June 6, 2016 in Saint-Corneille (Sarthe, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At around 9:30 p.m., a witness watched a large white, cloud-like dot with a white trail for more than ten minutes. Through binoculars, the object appeared to be made up of several dozen separate elements. The white dot then gradually faded until it disappeared completely.

At first glance, the description is not particularly strange and could fit one or several aircraft. That was in fact the witness's own first interpretation, and several aircraft were close together in the south-south-east at the time. However, GEIPAN could not take this idea any further, nor test any other, because the witness did not reply to its request for the phenomenon's height in the sky, or to its request to go to the gendarmerie and fill in a statement under the protocol linking the gendarmerie and GEIPAN. Because of this lack of information, the case was classified C.
