Sighting in Saint-Denis les Bains, November 12, 1984

La Réunion, France

Sighting on November 12, 1984 in Saint-Denis les Bains (La Réunion, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a meteor or fireball (class B).

What happened

Several witnesses saw a luminous phenomenon above the coastline at around 7 p.m. It remained visible for roughly 5 to 6 seconds. It looked like a white ball about the size of a football, trailing a bright red tail approximately 2 metres long.

The object moved slowly and silently, at low altitude, along a straight path.

The investigation concluded that these characteristics matched those of an atmospheric re-entry. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as B, meaning it was probably identified as an atmospheric re-entry.
