Sighting in Saint-Étienne-de-Lugdarès, July 24, 1993

Ardèche, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on July 24, 1993 in Saint-Étienne-de-Lugdarès (Ardèche, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty (class A).

What happened

During the night of 24 to 25 July, three witnesses watched a white luminous phenomenon for close to three quarters of an hour, from about 2:45 to 3:30 a.m. It moved while spinning on itself and was made up of many points of light.

The investigation quickly arrived at an explanation: the light came from a multifaceted projector at a nearby discotheque. Its beams were reflected on a low cloud ceiling, which makes them visible from a very long way off. The manager of the discotheque, who was also questioned, confirmed this hypothesis. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as A: the witnesses had seen a luminous object that seemed to rotate on itself.
