Sighting in Saint-Étienne-du-Rouvray, February 13, 2008

Seine-Maritime, Normandie, France

Sighting on February 13, 2008 in Saint-Étienne-du-Rouvray (Seine-Maritime, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a meteor or fireball (class B).

What happened

At around 1:25 in the morning, the witness woke up in the middle of the night and saw, from home, a large orange ball crossing the sky at very high speed on a descending path. The sighting lasted only a few seconds, and the object then vanished at once.

Only one account was collected. The case showed low strangeness and low consistency, because there was a single witness and the observation was extremely brief. GEIPAN concluded that the witness had very probably mistaken a natural bolide, that is, a natural atmospheric re-entry, for something unusual. With no independent testimony and no capture by an all-sky camera type of device, this hypothesis could not be formally confirmed. The case was classified B: probable misidentification of a bolide.
