Sighting in Saint-Geoire-en-Valdaine, July 11, 1976

Isère, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on July 11, 1976 in Saint-Geoire-en-Valdaine (Isère, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At about 10:05 p.m., two people noticed a bright red, circular light that stayed motionless. It was roughly 2 km away, too far to make out any details. One of the witnesses went to look for binoculars, and during that time the light moved off towards the west and then disappeared. No other witness account was gathered.

The gendarmerie went to the site with the witnesses. They found a dirt track about 50 m long, which joins an unclassified local road to the west, one the witnesses had not known about. The passage of a vehicle was considered as a possibility. However, given the distance of the observation and the few details provided, nothing made it possible to identify the phenomenon. GEIPAN classed the case as C, meaning there was insufficient data.
