Sighting in Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie, March 2, 1993
Vendée, Pays de la Loire, France
Sighting on March 2, 1993 in Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie (Vendée, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty (class A).
What happened
During the night of 1 to 2 March 1993, between 1:15 and 1:20 a.m., a witness in their bedroom noticed a large luminous phenomenon. They described it as two teardrops placed head to tail. There was only one witness, but their account was very detailed and the description of the phenomenon very precise.
The case had been classified C in 1993 by SEPRA. GEIPAN re-examined it, now having new software tools and more investigative experience. The review found that the duration of the observation, the shape, the size and the colour matched those of the Moon. Its light was shining through a layer of cloud that partly hid it, giving it strange, changing shapes. The Moon was indeed in the part of the sky the witness was looking at, although they did not mention it.
The case, of low strangeness, was therefore reclassified as A: observation of the Moon through thin cloud.
