Sighting in Saint-Jacques-sur-Darnétal, September 10, 2010

Seine-Maritime, Normandie, France

Sighting on September 10, 2010 in Saint-Jacques-sur-Darnétal (Seine-Maritime, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At around 9 p.m., a motorist noticed a glowing orange-red ball moving slowly. Its color changed during the sighting, and then the object suddenly vanished.

According to the description gathered, the light first looked like that of a very large star, yellowish-white, before turning orange-yellow. The object, egg-shaped, seemed almost motionless. It went out, and its path was consistent with the direction of the wind.

These features point to a luminous balloon of the Thai lantern type. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as B (probably identified): the witness most likely observed the movement of a Thai lantern.
