Sighting in Saint-Julien-du-Sault, July 8, 2012

Yonne, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France

Sighting on July 8, 2012 in Saint-Julien-du-Sault (Yonne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably one or more satellites (class B).

What happened

One evening in July 2012, at around 11:30 pm, a witness was in their garden when they noticed a point of light with the naked eye in a clear, cloudless sky. The point first moved in a straight line, then began to zigzag along a north–south axis. The sighting lasted several minutes. No other witness account was gathered for this phenomenon.

For the straight part of the path, the witness's description strongly suggests a satellite, since many of them cross the sky at that hour, as the Calsky list shows. The zigzag at the end of the path is unusual, but it can be explained by autokinesis, a physiological effect of visual perception. Calsky listed several candidate satellites, and IGS 1A appeared to fit best. GEIPAN classified the case as B: a probable satellite sighting, seen along part of its path, combined with an autokinetic effect.
