Sighting in Saint-Just-Saint-Rambert, July 25, 2009

Loire, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on July 25, 2009 in Saint-Just-Saint-Rambert (Loire, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a balloon (class B).

What happened

At around 7 p.m., several witnesses saw a white flying object go by. One of them, puzzled by it, described a white ball moving silently along the valley from north to south, at a steady speed and height. The object then suddenly climbed while accelerating and vanished from the sky at once.

The GEIPAN classified the case as B: it was probably a balloon. The slow movement of a silent white ball, the size of the object and its path along the valley all fit this kind of craft. The final acceleration was most likely caused by the balloon catching the wind. The witness had themselves suggested a weather-balloon type of device.
