What happened

At around 11 p.m., several witnesses saw three red lights, one after another, climb into the sky and then slowly drift back down. One of these phenomena was said to have started a fire.

The investigation quickly established that the lights were expired distress flares fired by a private individual. GEIPAN classified the case as A (identified): sighting of distress flares being fired.
