Sighting in Saint-Paul, April 1, 1976

La Réunion, France

Sighting on April 1, 1976 in Saint-Paul (La Réunion, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

At around 5:20 p.m., several people looking at the sky saw a white trail that seemed to dive into the sea. A mass of grey smoke then stayed over the water for about a quarter of an hour before vanishing completely.

The gendarmerie investigated and found that no aircraft from the airport had been flying after 5 p.m. No object or debris of any kind was recovered along the coast. GEIPAN considered it probable that the witnesses saw an object fall into the sea, but there was not enough information to identify it. The case was classified B, probably identified.
