Sighting in Saint-Pierre, January 9, 1976

La Réunion, France

Sighting on January 9, 1976 in Saint-Pierre (La Réunion, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

At about 7:50 a.m., a driver and their spouse noticed a bright object in the sky and watched it move about. It was shaped like a balloon with a truncated top. It travelled slowly and horizontally from the sea toward the mountains, following the contours of the ground. It then vanished into the landscape. No other witness account was collected.

Based on the description the two witnesses gave, GEIPAN concluded that they had probably seen a balloon drifting at sunrise. The case was classified B (probably identified).
