Sighting in Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse, July 1983
Isère, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France
Sighting in July 1983 in Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse (Isère, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).
What happened
Some time between 5 and 25 July 1983 (the exact day is uncertain), at around 6 a.m., two people sleeping in a bedroom woke up suddenly with the feeling of being watched. In a corner of the ceiling they saw a spherical ball, motionless and silent, about the size of a handball. It was transparent and luminous without being dazzling. It then crossed the room quickly and left through the open window.
The report was written in October 2013, long after the events. Even so, it is very detailed, and analysis of the account found no sign of false memory or fabrication. According to the expert from the Laboratoire de la Foudre (lightning laboratory), the description closely resembles a ball lightning phenomenon. The very hot, heavy weather the witness described fits with this idea.
However, the exact date is unknown and the case rests on a single testimony, so GEIPAN found nothing that could confirm the hypothesis. It classified the case "C" because of the lack of precise information on the date. The ball lightning explanation remains consistent with the witness's account.
