Sighting in Saint-Remèze, March 25, 2009

Ardèche, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on March 25, 2009 in Saint-Remèze (Ardèche, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

On the morning of 25 March 2009, between 8:43 and 8:44, two walkers saw a large white ball moving at low altitude before it vanished behind the Dent de Rez mountain massif. In a letter dated 3 April 2009, one of the witnesses explained that the object they had photographed was indeed a signalling balloon, but that what they had seen was something different.

The investigation considered that the sighting might have been Venus, which was visible near the eastern horizon that day. Settling the question would have required measuring the movement by lining the object up with fixed landmarks. However, the exact observation point is not known, so the hypothesis could not be confirmed. The case was therefore classified C, for insufficient data.
