Sighting in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, March 23, 1980

Bouches-du-Rhône, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting on March 23, 1980 in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence (Bouches-du-Rhône, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a light from the ground (searchlight, laser, vehicle…) (class A).

What happened

At about 10:20 p.m., several people contacted the Gendarmerie to report luminous phenomena they could not explain at the base of the "Mont Caume" television relay tower. The gendarmes went to the spot straight away and carried out further checks on the following evenings.

They found that the lights came from signalling floodlights recently installed at the foot of the tower. Other lighting effects visible from that location turned out to be the street lighting of nearby villages and the headlights of moving vehicles. At the time, mist and poor weather regularly drowned out and disrupted these light signals.

GEIPAN classified the case as A: the luminous phenomena observed were identified as floodlights.
