Sighting in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, July 16, 2015

Bouches-du-Rhône, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting on July 16, 2015 in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence (Bouches-du-Rhône, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

On a July evening, at about 10:21 pm, a witness noticed an object flying at low altitude that looked to them as if it were on fire. It moved silently from west to east, then stopped and changed course. It then vanished within a few seconds at most, straight down toward the ground, with an acceleration the witness found "surprising". The witness had time to take a picture with their phone, and the photo shows an orange "fireball". No other witness account was collected.

GEIPAN classified the case as B, a probable Thai lantern. Several points support this: the orange colour is like that of such lanterns; the behaviour matches an object subject to little or no wind; the movement followed the prevailing wind direction; the short observation, about one minute, fits the lifespan of a lantern; there was no noise; and the time of year and the location lent themselves to festivities. The apparent disappearance would be explained by the lantern going out.
