Sighting in Saint-Vit, January 17, 1998

Doubs, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France

Sighting on January 17, 1998 in Saint-Vit (Doubs, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

Two sightings of unidentified objects were reported a few days apart. The first involved three passengers in the same car, who on 17 January 1998 saw what looked like a shiny shell or framework, 20 to 25 metres across, marked with black stripes. Several luminous points, or lights, in yellow and red were visible on it. This account is known only from a newspaper article, and the three witnesses could never be identified or interviewed.

After that article appeared, a fourth witness came forward to describe a similar phenomenon seen on 21 January 1998 at around 6:30 pm. The witness was in a car at the time. For about twenty seconds, they watched a luminous disc that appeared twice the size of the Moon.

GEIPAN considered these accounts too brief and partly contradictory to allow a serious analysis of what was observed. The case is classified C, meaning there was insufficient data.
