Sighting in Sainte-Marie, May 5, 2014

La Réunion, France

Sighting on May 5, 2014 in Sainte-Marie (La Réunion, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was one or more satellites (class A).

What happened

A witness and their friend saw a flashing white light cross the sky from west to east at 18:40. It lasted about 20 seconds. The flashing alternated 4 seconds of light with 2 seconds of darkness. Only one witness account was collected.

The Calsky website listed a pass at 18:33 that day by the "Sinosat 2 Rocket", the third stage that had launched the Sinosat 2 satellite. Its path ran from west to east, consistent with the sighting. Another observer of the same object, who had posted a report online, estimated by eye a photometric period of between 4 and 4.5 seconds, which matches the flashing the witness described.

GEIPAN classified the case as A: the object was identified as the Sinosat 2 Rocket. The 20-second sighting is much shorter than the full pass, which lasted 6 minutes, but the witness only saw the object along the highest part of its trajectory, above 75° elevation.
