Sighting in Sainte-Savine, July 1, 2014

Aube, Grand Est, France

Sighting on July 1, 2014 in Sainte-Savine (Aube, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At around 10 p.m., a witness woken by a noise looked out of their window. They saw a triangular craft with three white lights at each end and a red light in the centre. They also heard a humming sound. The object seemed to skim the roof of the neighbouring house. The witness went to fetch binoculars and a camera, but the phenomenon had vanished before they could photograph it. Only one account was collected.

The witness's first thought had been of a drone. The humming, the impression of closeness and possibly the lighting, which is not regulated for civilian drones, fit that idea. However, flying drones over towns is prohibited, especially at night, and an internet search found no record of drone use near Troyes at that date and time. Confusion with an aeroplane or helicopter seemed hard to imagine, since the lights did not match an aircraft's navigation lights.

Several details were missing: the phenomenon's height when first seen, its angular size, whether the triangular shape was actually seen or inferred from the lights, whether the lights were steady or flashing, and daytime photographs from the witness's window. The witness was asked by email and did not reply. The drone hypothesis remains possible, but GEIPAN classified the case as C because of the lack of reliable information.
