Sighting in Sargé-lès-le-Mans, September 24, 2010

Sarthe, Pays de la Loire, France

Sighting on September 24, 2010 in Sargé-lès-le-Mans (Sarthe, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a balloon (class A).

What happened

Motorists driving on the A11 motorway toward Paris noticed an object in the sky that did not move, and it puzzled them. When they reached a rest area, they photographed it. Its structure looked like that of an airship. It was dark grey and showed no mooring point. It appeared motionless for the whole time they watched it. The witnesses then went back on the road and lost sight of it.

A statement from another witness made it possible to identify the object: a tethered balloon, held by a long cable, floating above the Auvours military camp in Champagné. The GEIPAN classified the case as A (identified): the witnesses had seen a tethered balloon shaped like an airship.
