Sighting in Saussenac, September 12, 2012

Tarn, Occitanie, France

Sighting on September 12, 2012 in Saussenac (Tarn, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class B).

What happened

At around 9:30 pm, a driver noticed three flashing lights of different colors (red, blue and white) low in the sky, forming a triangle. They heard no particular noise while the phenomenon moved. It changed heading and then disappeared in the direction of Saussenac. The sighting lasted about two minutes. No other witness account was collected.

GEIPAN rated the case as having medium strangeness and low consistency, since there was only one witness and the observation was short. It was most likely a mistaken sighting of an aircraft. The description was fairly typical, but the poor quality of the testimony and the long delay before the case was processed made it impossible to formally identify a specific airplane. The witness's visual perception was not in question; what mattered was how they interpreted what they saw, given how they felt (tiredness, driving at night). The case was classified B: probable observation of an aircraft.
