Sighting in Sisteron, August 2002

Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting in August 2002 in Sisteron (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

In early August 2002, at around 8:30 pm, a motorist saw an object crossing the sky, moving slowly in a straight line towards the south-east. It was cylindrical and brown, travelled without making any noise, and left a short trail behind it. The witness took a photograph with a film camera, then phoned the gendarmerie to report what they described as a rocket heading from the north-west to the south-east.

The witness found the photograph again several years later and sent GEIPAN a questionnaire and two photographs on 13 February 2011. The exact day of the sighting was not given, so GEIPAN arbitrarily dated it to 1 August 2002. No other witness account was collected.

GEIPAN classified the case as C (insufficient data): the report came in too late for any investigation to be possible, and there was not enough information to identify the object.
