Sighting in Solre-le-Château, January 3, 2014
Nord, Hauts-de-France, France
Sighting on January 3, 2014 in Solre-le-Château (Nord, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class B).
What happened
At around 3:10 pm, a driver and their passenger noticed two cigar-shaped, dark grey objects slowly crossing a gap in thick cloud. Only one account was collected. The witness also drew a summary sketch, which proved useful to the investigation.
GEIPAN compared the details of the sighting (altitude, elevation, azimuths and distance from the witnesses) with those of aircraft that might have caused it. They matched the passage of two airliners, flights AFR1263 and AFR1471, seen under unusual conditions. The account was judged fairly consistent and quite precise, though it came from a single witness and no photographs were taken. The objects' apparent behavior seemed rather unusual. However, the exact time the planes passed and the angular size of the objects as reported by the witnesses remain uncertain. The case was therefore classified B: a very probable sighting of two airliners.
