Sighting in Sougé-le-Ganelon, November 2, 1974

Sarthe, Pays de la Loire, France

Sighting on November 2, 1974 in Sougé-le-Ganelon (Sarthe, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

A driver and their passenger were surprised, at about 8:30 pm on a Saturday evening, by an object moving slowly and silently. It was shaped like a black tube, with three very dark red areas: one at each end and one in the middle. The driver got out of the vehicle and saw the craft rise vertically, then drift very slowly over the road and the trees before disappearing. The sighting lasted several minutes, after which the frightened witnesses drove on.

The case was reported to the GEIPAN only in 2008, more than thirty years after the event, and only one account was collected. The investigation considered that the three luminous discs were not in doubt, but that the tube itself was not certain: when several lights move together, an observer often mentally fills in a volume linking them. The phenomenon may therefore have been three lights moving slowly together, for example Thai lanterns carried by the wind, on the evening of the Day of the Dead. The GEIPAN did not adopt this explanation: no weather report was available to compare the movement of the lights with the local wind, and such lanterns were very uncommon in France at that time. As it was impossible to carry out these checks or find any other corroboration, the case was classified C, for insufficient information.
