Sighting in Soustons, August 13, 2012
Landes, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France
Sighting on August 13, 2012 in Soustons (Landes, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a light from the ground (searchlight, laser, vehicle…) (class B).
What happened
At five in the morning, a witness who was leaving their home noticed a white light phenomenon moving about in the cloud layer, and its movements intrigued them. A large circle made up of smaller circles kept appearing in cycles, then rotated and changed direction. No sound was heard. The witness watched it for 20 minutes from where they stood, then got into their vehicle and kept seeing it while driving.
The investigation found that what was described resembles a laser light show. The rising beam was visible because the witness was close to the projector; a distant observer would only have seen the bright discs on the clouds. Such a show is not surprising in this area in the middle of the tourist season, even at that early hour, since nightclubs are still open. One nightclub lies in the direction of the observation, to the west. The sky was completely overcast (8/8), which is very favourable for these devices. GEIPAN classified the case as B: probable observation of a light show.
