Sighting in Tarbes, September 5, 1976

Hautes-Pyrénées, Occitanie, France

Sighting on September 5, 1976 in Tarbes (Hautes-Pyrénées, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

At around 7:22 a.m., from the 15th floor of their apartment building, the witness noticed a luminous phenomenon in the sky that intrigued them. For about ten minutes they watched a red line of light to the southeast, above the Sarrouilles hills, until it disappeared toward the east. No other witness account was collected about it.

The gendarmerie investigation concluded that the sighting was probably linked to the passage of a weather balloon. The balloon had stayed aloft after dropping its payload in a field at Soues. There was no wind on 4 and 5 September 1976, and the two communes lie in roughly the same direction, southeast of Tarbes. GEIPAN classified the case as B: probable observation of a weather balloon.
