Sighting in Tavaux, June 7, 1978

Jura, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France

Sighting on June 7, 1978 in Tavaux (Jura, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At around 8:55 p.m., a driver and their passenger noticed a point of light far ahead of them, about 5 km away, which caught their attention. At around 9:15 p.m., they saw an orange luminous disc, oscillating as it moved, begin to rise slowly and vertically until it vanished into the clouds. Only a colored trail remained visible in the sky afterwards.

The sighting was reported in the press. Following the article, another person came forward: on the same day, between 9:30 and 9:45 p.m., they had seen a circular, yellow-orange luminous phenomenon in the sky.

GEIPAN classified the case as C: these observations of luminous phenomena in the sky remain unexplained because of a lack of sufficient detail.
