Sighting in Teloché, January 2, 2019

Sarthe, Pays de la Loire, France

Sighting on January 2, 2019 in Teloché (Sarthe, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was the star Sirius (class A).

What happened

Two witnesses, a parent and their child, were watching the sky together one evening when they noticed an unusual light, very far away and high up. It kept changing color, shifting between red, blue, white and green. It seemed very mobile, vanishing and reappearing quickly and repeatedly. The observation lasted about 35 minutes, and one of the witnesses filmed the phenomenon.

GEIPAN rated the case as low in strangeness and good in consistency, given the two witnesses, a single testimony and a video. The investigation concluded that the witnesses had mistaken the star Sirius for something unusual. The description and the long duration are typical of an astronomical misidentification. In the direction the witness indicated, Sirius matched every feature of the phenomenon: it was brighter than the other stars, its colored twinkling gave an impression of quick, limited movements, and another star was close by. Only the angular height of the light seemed overestimated compared with the real position of Sirius, which is common in reports of this kind. The case was classified A.
