Sighting in Toulouse, March 19, 2012

Haute-Garonne, Occitanie, France

Sighting on March 19, 2012 in Toulouse (Haute-Garonne, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

Three friends were leaving a restaurant at around 11:45 pm when they saw two luminous phenomena appear one after the other in the night sky. The first was a bright point that crossed the sky in a straight line in under ten seconds. The second, another point of light, then made a few zigzags before disappearing.

Each of the three witnesses wrote a very detailed report, though the reports are obviously not independent of one another. GEIPAN considers the case highly consistent, with reliable witnesses. Its strangeness is fairly low, however, because the phenomenon was relatively far away. The straight-line movement of the first point is not very strange, whereas the erratic path of the second is more so.

GEIPAN looked at many hypotheses. Some could not be ruled out entirely, but none could be confirmed. The bird hypothesis ranks first, but it is not solid enough, and no ornithology expert was able to validate it. With no cross-checking that would favor one explanation over another, the case is classified C: insufficient data.
