Sighting in Toulouse, July 5, 2014

Haute-Garonne, Occitanie, France

Sighting on July 5, 2014 in Toulouse (Haute-Garonne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

Around 11 p.m., a witness saw a bright light rise from the ground into the sky, then speed off westward. A few minutes later a second luminous phenomenon appeared and followed the same path. Both lights moved without a sound.

The lights were yellow, and the sighting took place on a Saturday evening. They travelled one after the other in the direction the wind was blowing, a light easterly wind having been recorded at Blagnac. These details are consistent with Thai lanterns released at the end of a party. Because the case was of relatively low strangeness, the GEIPAN did not consider an on-site investigation necessary. It classified the case as B: probable observation of Thai lanterns.
