Sighting in Toulouse, July 19, 2014

Haute-Garonne, Occitanie, France

Sighting on July 19, 2014 in Toulouse (Haute-Garonne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

On a weekend night, around 10:45 pm, witnesses driving a car and coming from the south saw two yellow-orange balls in the sky. The sighting lasted a few minutes. The two lights appeared to move very little.

GEIPAN found that the description closely matched Thai lanterns, most likely released nearby at the end of a private party. The slight movement observed fits with the light southerly wind recorded at Montauban that evening. At the same time, a similar sighting was made at Bruguières (31), and the two may have had the same origin.

The case was classified B: probably identified as Thai lanterns.
