Sighting in Toulouse, August 4, 2015

Haute-Garonne, Occitanie, France

Sighting on August 4, 2015 in Toulouse (Haute-Garonne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At around 11 p.m. or 11:15 p.m., several people on a terrace saw two large, glowing orange-red circles in the sky. The objects moved in a straight line, at the same speed and in complete silence. They passed over the roof of the house and were lost from view. A third object then appeared, its brightness seeming to fade. The witnesses walked around the house, but it was gone.

Only one account was collected. According to the GEIPAN, the colors, shapes and grouped flight described strongly suggest Thai lanterns. The movement was mainly north to south, at a steady elevation of about 60° and with an azimuth shifting from northwest to southwest. This matches the wind, blowing mainly from north to south, recorded very nearby at Blagnac. The changing look of the third object can be explained by the lantern gradually going out, turning from a glowing circle into a gray one, which remains visible when surroundings are not too dark, as is often the case in a city. Its fall, which can be fast, may have happened just as the house hid it from view. The GEIPAN therefore classified the case as B: probable observation of Thai lanterns.
