Sighting in Tournefeuille, August 17, 2014

Haute-Garonne, Occitanie, France

Sighting on August 17, 2014 in Tournefeuille (Haute-Garonne, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a meteor or fireball (class A).

What happened

At about 9:10 p.m., a witness looking out of an open window saw a large fireball cross the sky at high speed. It was followed by a short, very bright and luminous yellow-white trail. After moving horizontally, the phenomenon vanished. The sighting lasted only a few seconds.

The GEIPAN, based at the CNES site in Toulouse about 12 km from the witness, has a camera that is permanently ready to record this kind of event. It filmed the same phenomenon at 9:11 p.m. In the video, it appears at the upper left of the circle, which corresponds to the south-east direction.

The GEIPAN classified the case as A: it was definitely a bolide, a fast, straight-line passage of a large fireball, which was also captured by the GEIPAN camera.
