Sighting in Tournus, July 29, 1984

Saône-et-Loire, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France

Sighting on July 29, 1984 in Tournus (Saône-et-Loire, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

Over several nights, from 29 July to 2 August 1984, a number of witnesses noticed objects in the sky that were as bright as stars. The objects gave off flashes of red and green light. The sightings took place at night under a clear sky, after days of intense heat. From one night to the next, the position of the objects shifted slightly.

The investigation checked a sky chart: the part of the sky being watched was the constellation Perseus. At that time of year, this region is the site of many luminous phenomena known as the Perseids. GEIPAN concluded that the witnesses had probably observed stars, and the case was classified B (probably identified).
